Today, rising folk star Andrea von Kampen shares a new live version of her song “Take Back Thy Gift,” the lead track (and fan-favorite) from her album That Spell released last year via Fantasy Records. The session was co-produced and mixed by Mike Mogis (Phoebe Bridgers, Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) and recorded live in his Another Recording Company studio in Omaha, NE. Watch the accompanying performance video captured in-studio HERE.

“Recording ‘Take Back Thy Gift’ live in the studio was an exhilarating experience,” Andrea observed. “After spending many months without shows and live music, it was so special gathering at ARC studio in Omaha with my usual band plus a string section to play songs from my new record. Bringing this group to Mike Mogis and having him work his magic made the session come together so beautifully.”

“It was such a pleasure working with Andrea and her band,” Mike Mogis affirmed. “Maybe for the first few minutes it was because we had all just got fully vaccinated back then and it felt great to be making music with an artist in person again. Very quickly, though, it became a true pleasure as Andrea’s songs resonated with me and their performances felt effortless, touching, and genuine. It was a very good day.”

This release is the first of the new year for von Kampen who finished out 2021 on a unique high note. Her on-going Christmas-time collaboration with Haford Hardware, an independent hardware store based in Wales, UK, peaked this year when the Prince of Wales himself, Prince Charles visited the store in person last month. His visit, aimed to shed much-needed light on the importance of shopping at independent retail stores, was captured in a short video released last month just before Christmas. The festive outing features scenes of Prince Charles perusing the store in search of the perfect gift while the enchanting melody of von Kampen’s recently released original song “Old Fashioned Holiday” invokes the whimsey and magic of holidays past.  (At one point, we even see the future King of England pick up a vinyl copy of von Kampen’s new album, That Spell.). Von Kampen released That Spell, her first album for Fantasy Records in August of 2021. The standout tracks include “Take Back Thy Gift,”  “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder),” (Beach Boys cover) and “Water Flowing Downward” which was highlighted by Bob Boilen on NPR’s All Songs Considered podcast – listen HERE.

Named as one of the top ten entries in NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, Andrea von Kampen burst onto the national stage in 2016 and netted a quickly growing fanbase. Since then, she’s released singles, EP’s, a self-released debut LP and found great success with film and television placements due to her highly cinematic songwriting and striking, one-of-kind vocal ability.

The Nebraska-raised singer-songwriter is a bright new presence among the contemporary folk movement with songs that encompass lyrical eloquence and a wide-open cinematic sound. Von Kampen excels at connecting the dots between personal experience and the world at large.  On her latest LP That Spell, with production and string arrangements by her brother David, her deep love of literature and refined sense of composition shines through in one of 2021’s most essential new recordings.
