DEBUT ALBUM OUTSIDE CHILD OUT NOW
Allison Russell’s Outside Child – a debut tour de force – continues its awards victory lap with 3 Americana Music Association (AMA) nominations today and a Juno Award win this past weekend for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Russell is the first-ever Black artist to win the category in Juno history. Her AMA nominations include Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Persephone” co-written by JT Nero.
Last night, Russell also appeared on CMT’s Naomi Judd: River of Life Celebration, where she performed “The Sweetest Gift” with the legendary Emmylou Harris.

On the critically acclaimed Outside Child (produced by Dan Knobler), Allison Russell, the poet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, activist and co-founder of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago, unpacks her youth in searing detail. She sings about deliverance and redemption, about the places and people and realizations that helped her survive and claim her freedom. “It’s an album of strength and affirmation, not victimization,” said The New York Times in their profile on Russell. Following the release of Outside Child, Russell performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ellen, Late Night With Stephen Colbert and CBS This Morning, made her Opry debut and appeared at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
For Russell, and Outside Child, the accolades continue to mount. In addition to today’s Americana Award nominations, and Russell’s first-ever Juno Award win for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year over the weekend, she was also nominated for Songwriter of the Year. Last year, Russell received 2 Americana Awards nominations, won 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards and 3 UK Americana Music Awards, and was nominated for 3 GRAMMY Awards (her first ever GRAMMY nods.) Lastly, Russell is nominated for two Folk Alliance International’s ‘Best of 2021 Awards,’ Album of the Year and Artist of the Year – winners will be announced on May 18th.
On May 25th, Allison is set to make her Austin City Limits debut, which happens to be the venerable PBS program’s historic 1000th episode. Allison Russell also recently announced a book deal with Flatiron/MacMillian for her debut novel, a memoir based on her life and the material of Outside Child.
Allison Russell is on tour throughout North America, the UK and Europe throughout 2022. Highlights include a run of dates opening for Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird & Iron and Wine. A full list of tour dates can be found below.
