Hard rock giants Seether have been around for 18 years and they’ve produced hit after hit. Songs like “Gasoline”, “Driven Under”, “Broken (ft. Amy Lee”), “Rise Above This” and “Country Song” are staples in radio rock. Their “greatest hits” collection, titled “Seether 2002-2013” contains every one of these, but there is a second disc, which makes this release a bit more interesting. On it, we have 3 new tracks and several b-sides. They decided to cover their namesake track, Veruca Salt’s “Seether” and throw their personal flavor into it. As they did with George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”, you can definitely feel the Seether vibe on this cover. The 2 other new tracks, “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” and “Weak” are similar in design, but definitely a reminder of how incredible and diverse this band can be. “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” is acoustically driven, but explodes in the chorus with Shaun Morgan’s incredibly familiar warcry like vocals. “Weak”, on the other hand, is slower and will remind fans of tracks like “Sympathetic”, and some of the slower tracks on their “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” album. These 2 tracks are a reminder of how incredible this band is and how much they can adhere to their sound, while finding ways to experiment and keep fans guessing. To my surprise, though, they added one of my absolute favorite Seether tracks, “Out of My Way” (originally on Disclaimer II). It’s an incredibly edgy, angry and underrated track that really shows some of the power that Shaun’s voice has.

Just when you think you’ve got this disc figured out, it goes and throws you a curve ball. A “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” b-side called “Blister” hits your ears. Slow, beautiful and melodic, reminiscent of “Driven Under” in some ways, but would have fit perfectly as a bonus track on FBINS. The demos at the end of this disc are pretty incredible as well. Starting with “Burn the Bridges”, progressing into “Butterfly With Teeth” and ending with “Melodious”, it really gives you an idea of how incredible this band can sound, even in a rough setting. Butterfly With Teeth is definitely one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard, in terms of instrumentals and lyrics. It showcases the band’s softer side and might even make you shed a few tears! Melodious was a perfect pick to close out disc 2, as it feels like an outro track, rather than an album track. It’s not a filler, but it doesn’t have enough album-like quality to be thrown into the mix with any other album track. That’s not to say it’s a bad track or unworthy of your attention, because it’s definitely one of the best considering it’s a demo.

If you are now or have ever been a Seether fan, “Seether: 2002-2013” is a must-have for your collection! On disc 1, you get all 14 hits which you know and love so much but on disc 2, you get rarities and demos. What more could you ask for in one collection?
