Additionally, Kaplan has performed a string of intimate at home live performances that include The Boot’s “Social Distancing” series, American Songwriter’s “Behind The Mic”, Paste’s “Paste Happiest Hour” and The Bluegrass Situation’s “Whiskey Sour Happy Hour” which is hosted by comedian Ed Helms, garnering over 44,000 total views between the outlets. His EP, released on Fantasy Records, garnered critical attention from tastemaker media, from Paste to American Songwriter who described Kaplan’s nuanced vocal as “rich, tender and abounding.”
On I’ll Get By, Kaplan shared personal stories about love, anxiety, loss, and his time growing up in California. Exploring a range of sounds from soul to bluegrass, these songs are threaded together by the search for spiritual redemption, and cast with acoustic guitar, pedal steel, swirling organ and deep groove percussion that beautifully complements Kaplan’s haunting, otherworldly vocal ability. A compelling introduction from an inspiring singer-songwriter, I’ll Get By pays homage to some of his early influences such as Bill Withers, John Denver, and Simon and Garfunkel, whilst offering a new contemporary twist on 60s heritage influenced folk music. With the exception of the lead track, “Change on the Rise,” (produced by Paul Moak) I’ll Get By was helmed by producer Mike Mogis, well known for his work with Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst and First Aid Kit among others. On I’ll Get By, Kaplan, the former Pentatonix star, raised just 40 minutes from Sequoia National Park in the rolling hills of central California, has rediscovered his musical roots and delved deeper into the music he’s always loved.
